Bushfire Season 2009

Keech urges residents to be prepared for bushfire season

The bushfire season is already upon us, and this summer is shaping up to be one of the hottest and driest seasons ever.

As the State Member for Albert, I would like to let you know of important ways you and your family can prepare to ensure you remain safe in the event of a bushfire emergency.

Early preparation and simple activities can certainly be effective.

• Make sure flammable materials, including outdoor items that could easily burn are kept well away from the house

• Create ‘low fuel’ pathways to the house (e.g. driveways, paths, gravelled areas with no or little vegetation)

• Remove, cut or mow brushes, grass and weeds around sheds, fences and gates

• Clear overhanging branches from the roof

• Clean gutters and buy gutter plugs

Fires can destroy homes suddenly under these weather conditions and people should discuss their bushfire plans with their families in case they are faced with a fire emergency.

Those who plan to leave should finalise their options and be prepared to leave if necessary.

We are fortunate here in Albert to have an army of dedicated volunteers supporting our many rural fire brigades. The amazing work they do each year in protecting us and our properties from the threat of bushfire is invaluable.

I know that many of you will already have advanced bushfire plans in place, but whether your family have lived here for generations or are new arrivals to the area, bushfire safety is not something that we can afford to be complacent about.

I trust you find this information useful and I hope you have a safe summer.
