Margaret Majella Keech was elected to Parliament as the first female State Member for Albert in February 2001.
On March 21 2009 she was elected to her fourth straight term in Parliament, and on invitation from Premier Anna Bligh, has taken on the new position of Government Whip.
Margaret's previous roles included Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading and most recently Child Safety and Women.
Margaret and her husband Peter and their three children have lived in Albert since 1980.
Prior to entering Parliament, Margaret was a language and learning advisor for international students at the Queensland University of Technology. As a teacher, Margaret has a long and distinguished career educating students from kindergarten to post-graduate university.
Margaret's international work experiences include Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and Japan, where she has lectured as a professional development officer and educator. Margaret is passionate about the role of education in helping young people reach their full potential.
Margaret is active in the local community. In 1981, Margaret started the first public playgroup in Beenleigh and later established the popular Sunday craft market in Main St. Margaret is the co-founder of the local Residents Association and was chair of the Beenleigh Police District Community Consultative Committee.
Margaret has a small business background and is a member of the Beenleigh Yatala Chamber of Commerce.
Margaret has a Master of Arts, a Bachelor of Economics, a Graduate Diploma in Teaching and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics.
After more than 8 years dedicated public service, Margaret remains passionate about serving her growing community. She describes her job as "the best in the world" and enjoys working hard every day to make a difference in the lives of the people of Albert.
