NOMINATIONS FOR AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS OPENMember for Albert Margaret Keech has opened up nominations for her annual Margaret Keech Australia Day Awards. If you would like to nominate a hard-working and committed community member please contact my office. NEW GUARD RAILS FOR TAMBORINE-OXENFORD ROAD New guard rails on Tamborine-Oxenford Road have been installed after works were fast-tracked. Member for Albert Margaret Keech said the guard rails, which were scheduled to be installed next year, have been fast-tracked in time for the busy holiday season. GOLD COAST TO HOST THE 2018 COMMONWEALTH GAMESMember for Albert Margaret Keech was on hand at the Broadwater Parklands to hear the announcement all Gold Coasters have been waiting for that Gold Coast will play host to the 2018 Commonwealth Games. 3 NEW FIRST YEAR CONSTABLES FOR COOMERA POLICE DISTRICT"Three new police offiers are on their way to serve and protect our community" says Members for Albert Margaret Keech. The new officers are apart of the ongoing investment in policing which has seen the number of sworn police officers rise by more than 50% in the past 10 years. CALL FOR NEW ORMEAU POLICE STATION CONTINUESState Member for Albert Margaret Keech has continued her push for a new plolice station in the Albert electorate. The call for a 24-hour police presence has gained wide community support. The Albert electorate covers a large and diverse area in South-East Queensland in the rapid-growth corridor between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.At the recent Electoral Commission redistribution, the electorate lost areas to the east of the M1 Motorway, and gained some areas that were previously in the electorate of Gaven.Suburbs within Albert include:* Bannockburn* Belivah* Cedar Creek* Kingsholme* Luscombe* Mount Warren Park* Ormeau (West of the M1)* Ormeau Hills* Oxenford* Pacific Pines (North of Binstead Way)* Pimpama (West of the M1)* Willow Vale* Windaroo* Wongawallan* YatalaAlbert was first used as an electorate name under the 1887 redistribution, and it survived successive boundary alterations until 1949, when the Darlinghurst and Southport electorates were created.The name was revived in 1959 and retained, though covering a reduced geographic area than previously. Current electoral enrolment for Albert stands at 28,742 (at 28 February 2009) and 2006 Census data records the total electorate population at 60,396.Albert has become a centre for industry, tourism and families with Movieworld, Wet 'n' Wild are among the major attractions within its borders. Conveniently located beside the M1 motorway, the Yatala Enterprise Area is a much sought-after regional base for local, national and multi-national business.Schools in the electorate are:* Assisi Catholic College * Beenleigh Special School * Cedar Creek State School, * Coomera Anglican College * Coomera Springs State School* Gaven State School* Highland Reseve State School * Mount Warren Park State School * Norfolk Village State School * Oxenford State School* Pimpama State School * Rivermount College * Saint Stephens College * Upper Coomera State College * Windaroo State School * Windaroo Valley State High School.Hospitals servicing the Albert electorate are Logan Hospital and Gold Coast Hospital, with a new 750 bed university hospital (to be located at Parklands) under construction.
Margaret Majella Keech was elected to Parliament as the first female State Member for Albert in February 2001.On March 21 2009 she was elected to her fourth straight term in Parliament, and is currently the Government Whip of the Queensland Parliament.Margaret's previous roles included Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading and most recently Child Safety and Women.Margaret and her husband Peter and their three children have lived in Albert since 1980.Prior to entering Parliament, Margaret was a language and learning advisor for international students at the Queensland University of Technology. As a teacher, Margaret has a long and distinguished career educating students from kindergarten to post-graduate university.Margaret's international work experiences include Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and Japan, where she has lectured as a professional development officer and educator. Margaret is passionate about the role of education in helping young people reach their full potential.Margaret is active in the local community. In 1981, Margaret started the first public playgroup in Beenleigh and later established the popular Sunday craft market in Main St. Margaret is the co-founder of the local Residents Association and was chair of the Beenleigh Police District Community Consultative Committee.Margaret has a small business background and is a member of the Beenleigh Yatala Chamber of Commerce.Margaret has a Master of Arts, a Bachelor of Economics, a Graduate Diploma in Teaching and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics.After ten years of dedicated public service, Margaret remains passionate about serving her growing community. She describes her job as "the best in the world" and enjoys working hard every day to make a difference in the lives of the people of Albert.
